Postdoctoral Research Associate - 3D Printed Electronics

Purpose

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a post-doctoral research associate position. The successful candidate will conduct analytical and experimental research in the areas of nanoscale materials and devices, printed electronics, additive manufacturing, and combined electronics printing and additive manufacturing. This position is in the Sensors and Controls Group in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructures Division (EEID) of the Energy Science and Technology Directorate at ORNL.

The candidate is expected to collaborate with staff across multiple divisions at ORNL including the ORNL Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF), and may be asked to participate in discussions, conferences, and project review meetings with other national labs, industry, and universities.

Major Duties / Responsibilities

  • Design, model, and characterize printed electronics and additive manufacturing processes for multifunctional system development
  • Develop, fabricate, test, and optimize material and device performances in terms of process-structure-property correlations
  • Investigate existing and new methods for printing quality assessment (both ex-situ and in-situ)
  • Develop low thermal budget annealing schemes exploiting pulse thermal processing technology
  • Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity
  • Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in key peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Required Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or closely related field is required. Must have completed all degree requirements before starting their appointment, and be within five years of receiving their Doctorate.
  • Prior research experience in functional inks and printed electronics technology is required, as is expertise in fabrication and microstructure, electrical, and optical characterization of nanomaterials and nanodevices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills are mandatory.
  • The ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience is key to success.
  • The ability to be a self-starter and to work independently, and willing to participate creatively in a collaborative team both internal and external to ORNL are required.
  • The incumbent must be capable of innovative, independent research within broadly defined directions, but also have the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues.
  • Proven ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, to set priorities, multi-task and adapt to ever changing needs is required.
  • Must be highly motivated and have the ability to work in a frequently interacting team.
  • The abilities to work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time and to independently set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks to meet deadlines are required.

Other Desired Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience in printed electronics applications, additive manufacturing or energy-related applications is particularly desirable.
  • Possession of a strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences is desired.

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.

Work Directions and Interfaces

This position reports to Dr. Pooran Joshi (alternate Dr. Nance Ericson) in the EEID Division, and interfaces with research and administrative staff, managers, and visitors to ORNL. Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
